What is the project about?
What is the task?
MAD Asia approached award-winning design studio for&st and me to produce a series of animations for their inclusivity programme for children aged 6-12. Originally planned as a short summer course with three animations, the project expanded to 8 videos covering the entire school year, and ended up with an open exhibition.
The team hopes that the animations can highlight the diversity of different cultures and introduce the concept of empathy through short stories. Together with the team, we had to produce stories that explain diversity through everyday objects such as food, toys, or games.
How did I approach the project?
We designed five characters using geometric shapes to represent diverse communities while avoiding stereotypes. The characters represent people from diverse backgrounds, including SEN children, individuals with physical disabilities, and those with different religious beliefs. When animating, I kept the whole motion bouncing to ensure it was engaging for younger children.
Started as a primary school programme, the project ended up as an exhibition featuring all the materials. The programme also partnered with the Hong Kong Museum of Art, pairing museum exhibits with children's artwork.
