Hong Kong’s booksellers and publishers are facing threats following the National Security Law enacted in July 2020. Booksellers could violate the law that carries strict punishments for vague offenses such as “separating the country” and “subverting state power”, and could potentially face jail time.

This investigative journalism piece interviews authors and publishers who were affected by the law. Alongside the opening sequence, I created an animation elaborating on the books that had been “disappeared” since the implementation of the law.

The censorship reminds me of red lines lingering over the head of the industry, with books being treated as dangerous materials that have to be kept away from the public.
